Later, after the kids had gone to bed and Bobbie was on the phone with her sister, Jaicyn sat in her office trying to think of a way to tell Rayshawn that Angelina was coming to stay with them for a few days. Her Facetime app on her iPad started beeping. Jaicyn connected the call and smiled when Joy and Taylor’s faces showed up on her screen. She hadn’t talked to her friends in awhile.

“You got my gift!” Jaicyn squealed.

“Yeah, this thing is amazing!” Joy laughed. “I be feelin’ like I’m really doin’ something when I pull out my iPad.”

“How much is that thing worth?” Taylor asked.

“Don’t sell it,” Jaicyn scolded. “It’s a gift. I know y’all ain’t hurtin’ for cash that much.”

Taylor frowned. “The lies you tell. Who ain’t hurtin’ for cash except you? I’m movin’ to the A and coming to work for you. This place is dry as hell.”

“For real though,” Joy co-signed. “Ain’t shit poppin’ here.”

“Well, as soon as you want to make a move for real,” Jaicyn said, “let me know. You know I got you if you come down here.”

“You need to bring your ass back home and see us!” Joy said. “You know Miss Parole over here can’t leave the state. We miss kickin’ it with you. The Red Room ain’t the same without your crazy ass there.”

“You’re coming down for Bobbie’s graduation party, right?” Jaicyn grinned. Y’all thought we turned up when Rickie graduated, wait until you see what I got planned for us this year. The turn up is real, girl!”

“Yaaasssssss, biatch!” Taylor shouted. “Girl, I’m hopping my happy ass in the car with Joy. I don’t care what my PO says. Speakin’ of that bitch, let me tell you what she did!”

As Jaicyn barely listened to Taylor’s latest about how her parole officer was going to get her ass kicked, everything that Sandy said and what she knew about Washington Heights crossed Jaicyn’s mind. Now that she knew she needed to go home, her plan was starting to come into place.
